NFPA Mounting Style Guide
Sheffer cylinders are available in all standard NFPA mounting styles — dimensionally interchangeable to meet ANSI/NFPA specifications. Use this guide to identify the right mounting configuration for your application.
Sheffer NFPA Cylinders
Sheffer cylinders are built to ANSI/NFPA dimensional specifications, making them dimensionally interchangeable with any NFPA-standard cylinder across all mounting styles.
Key Cylinder Features
Piston Rod
Rods through 4″ diameter have a minimum expected yield of 100,000 psi. Case hardened to 50 Rockwell C to a depth of .030″ and hard chrome plated for wear and corrosion resistance.
Studded Rod End (Style 2)
Offers much longer fatigue life through elimination of thread relief stress concentration. Standard on all rod sizes through 2½” diameter. Studs are pre-torqued, locked in, and machined from high tensile steel with rolled threads.
Piston & Seal
All pistons are machined from fine grain alloy cast iron. The special piston seal is endless glass-filled Teflon with an O-ring expander — offering long life, low friction, near-zero leakage, and great tolerance for side loading.
Tie Rod Construction
Maximum strength obtained through a prestressed tie rod assembly. Tube ends are machined concentric with the ID and confined by close-tolerance head and cap machining for greater hoop strength.

Ordering Note: To ensure prompt delivery, always specify the mounting style by Sheffer designation (e.g., FF, SL, TF) when ordering. Also specify bore, stroke, cushion (CF/CR/CC), rod end style, rod size, port size, and operating pressure. Contact your distributor or the Sheffer factory for complete ordering information.
Flange Mounts
Sheffer flange mounts bolt the cylinder directly to a machine structure via a flange plate at the rod end (front) or cap end (rear). The catalog rates three tiers: Good (standard flange), Better (extra size), and Best (head flange) — based on pressure, stroke, and load capacity.
Front Flange Mounts
Front Flange Mount
Per the catalog: “Good — While this style of mount is a widely used one, its use should be restricted to pressures under 1,000 psi, short strokes (under 36″) and standard rod diameters.” The round retainer is not used on 1⅛”, 1½”, 2″ bores or select 2½” and 3¼” bore/rod combinations — tie rods thread directly into the flange in those sizes.
1,000 PSI Limit Rod End 1⅛”–14″ BoreFront Flange Mount Extra Size
Per the catalog: “Better — Satisfactory for maximum operating pressure and long strokes if properly applied.” The extra-size flange provides a larger bolt pattern for higher load capacity. Includes full round gland retainer on most bore/rod combinations. See Accessories Brochure for detailed mounting data.
Full Pressure Long Stroke OK Rod EndFront Head Flange Mount
Per the catalog: “Best — Highly recommended. This is the best style of flange mounting. Used extensively on high tonnage presses and other heavy duty applications.” Features an RD pilot boss for precise alignment. Can be mounted on the back face of the head flange. Sheffer recommends Style 6 rod end with S.A.F.E. coupling for best radial alignment.
Best Rating High Tonnage RD PilotRear Flange Mounts
Rear Flange Mount
Per the catalog: “Good — While this style of mount is a widely used one, its use should be restricted to pressures under 1,000 psi, short strokes (under 36″) and standard rod diameters.” Round retainer not used on 1⅛”, 1½”, 2″ bores or select 2½”/3¼” combinations — a square retainer the same size as the head is used instead.
1,000 PSI Limit Cap End 1⅛”–14″ BoreRear Flange Mount Extra Size
Per the catalog: “Better — Satisfactory for maximum operating pressure and long strokes if properly applied.” Larger bolt pattern than standard RF provides higher load capacity at full 3,000 PSI working pressure. Consult Accessories Brochure for detailed mounting data and Engineering Brochure for long-stroke information.
Full Pressure Long Stroke OK Cap EndRear Head Flange Mount
Per the catalog: “Best — Highly recommended. This is the best style of flange mounting. Used extensively on high tonnage presses and other heavy duty applications.” Can be mounted on the back face of the flange. Sheffer recommends Style 6 rod end and S.A.F.E. Coupling for good radial alignment.
Best Rating High Tonnage Cap EndLug Mounts
Sheffer lug mounts attach the cylinder via lugs — projections from the barrel or ends. The catalog lists three styles: Side Lug (SL), Center Line Lug (CL), and End Lug (EL). Consult the Accessories Brochure for selection and application guidance.
Important Notice from Catalog: On SL and CL mounts, the round gland retainer is not used on 1⅛”, 1½”, or 2½” bore (with 1¾” rod) and 3¼” bore (with 2″ rod) — a square retainer the same size as the head is used instead. The rod gland can be removed without loosening the tie rods in all sizes.
Side Lug Mount
Lug pairs project from the side of the barrel with tapped mounting holes (SB bolt size). Key catalog dimensions: US (lug center spacing), SW (lug width), SU (lug height), ST (lug thickness), TS (overall lug span). When specifying with side ports (positions 2, 4, 6, or 8), verify clearance between port fitting and lug for bolt insertion.
Side Lug 1⅛”–14″ Bore All PressuresCenter Line Lug Mount
The lug mounting holes align exactly with the bore centerline (ST dimension), so thrust passes directly through the lug fasteners with no offset moment. The catalog lists TS and US dimensional data for each bore size. Same gland retainer construction notes as SL apply — square retainer used on select small bores.
Centerline Thrust 1⅛”–14″ Bore All PressuresEnd Lug Mount
Lugs are integral to both the cap and head ends (EB bolt size). Available 1⅛” through 8″ bore only. Key catalog dimensions: EL (lug length), EO (lug offset from cylinder end), EX (lug extension), ET (lug thickness). When using a rod eye or clevis, specify extra plain rod extension per catalog Chart A to clear the lug.
End Lugs 1⅛”–8″ Bore Only All PressuresTrunnion Mounts
Trunnion mounts allow the cylinder to pivot in one plane during the stroke. Per the catalog: “All trunnion cylinders need provision on both ends for pivoting in one direction. Alignment in the other direction is essential in order to avoid excessive side loading.”
Caution from Catalog: TF mount cylinders in bore sizes 5″ through 8″ with oversize piston rods, and bore sizes 10″, 12″, and 14″ with all piston rod diameters should not be used over 2,000 psi. If your application demands higher pressure, consult the factory. Sheffer trunnion pins are machined as an integral part of the head (TF), cap (TR), or intermediate ring (T) — the strongest, most fatigue-resistant method. Pillow blocks of ample size and rigidity should be provided and mounted as close to the head or cap as possible. Pins are designed for shear loads only, not bending. Lubrication must be provided.
Trunnion Front Mount
Integral trunnion pins at the front head (rod end). Per catalog: pins are designed for shear loads only — not bending. Pillow blocks must be mounted as close to the head as possible and support the full pin length. Key dimensions: TD (pin diameter, +.000/-.001), TL (pin length), UT (overall trunnion width), XG (cap to pivot). XI dimensions must be customer-supplied on all T-style mounts.
Front Pivot Shear Load Only 2,000 PSI limit on large boresTrunnion Rear Mount
Integral trunnion pins at the rear cap end. Key dimensions: TD (pin diameter), TL (pin length), UT (overall trunnion width), XJ (rod end to pivot + stroke). The round gland retainer is not used on 1⅛”, 1½”, 2½” bore (with 1¾” rod), or 3¼” bore (with 2″ rod) — square retainer is used and the rod gland can be removed without loosening tie rods.
Rear Pivot Shear Load Only Lubrication RequiredTrunnion Mount — Intermediate
Trunnion ring positioned between the heads — position is NOT adjustable. Per catalog: “NOTE: XI Dimensions must be supplied by customer on all correspondence.” Both XI MIN and XI MAX + STROKE must be specified. Key dims: TB (ring width), TM (ring OD), TT (pin width), UM (overall width). Square retainer used on 1⅛”, 1½”, 2″ bore, 2½” with 1⅜”/1¾” rod, 3¼” with 2″ rod.
Mid-Barrel Pivot XI Dims Required Not AdjustableClevis, Side Flush & Foot Bracket Mounts
These three mounting styles all have bore limitations and specific pressure cautions per the catalog.
Clevis Mount
Catalog dimensions include: CB (clevis bore width), CD (clevis bore diameter), CW (clevis width), CL (overall clevis length), LR (lug length), MR (mounting radius). Available 1⅛” through 8″ bore only. A pivot mount is also available — pivot width is the same as CB. Square retainer replaces round retainer on 1⅛”, 1½”, 2″, 2½” (with 1⅜”/1¾” rod), and 3¼” (with 2″ rod) bores.
Cap End Pivot 1⅛”–8″ Bore Only Pivot Option AvailableSide Flush Mount
Side rails fit flush to the barrel OD with a close E-.003/2-.008 tolerance and are tapped with NT thread (size varies by bore). Available 1½” through 8″ bore only. Some bore/rod combinations are not available — “NA” in the catalog. Catalog notes: the 1⅛” bore has only one tapped hole in the head and cap. Includes thrust key option for side-mounted cylinders in severe service.
Flush Rail 1½”–8″ Bore Only Thrust Key OptionFoot Bracket Mount
L-shaped foot brackets bolt to flat surfaces using AB bolt size (6 holes per bracket; 4 holes on 1⅛” bore). Available 1⅛” through 8″ bore only. Per catalog: “This style of mount is not recommended for pressures in excess of 1,000 psi or strokes over 36 inches.” For higher pressures, the catalog recommends End Lug (EL) or Side Lug (SL) instead. Square retainer used on 1⅛”, 1½”, 2″, 2½” (with 1⅜”/1¾” rods), and 3¼” (with 2″ rod).
1,000 PSI Limit 1⅛”–8″ Bore Only Max 36″ StrokeTie Rod Extended & Double Rod Mounts
Sheffer cylinders support four tie rod extended styles and double rod extension on all mounts except Clevis (Style C).
NX · BX · RX · FX — Tie Rods Extended
